Supporting Youth Mental Health through Bell Let’s Talk Day

Mental health is an important part of our well-being, yet many young people struggle to talk about it. In Canada, mental health challenges among youth are on the rise, making it crucial to have open conversations about these issues. Initiatives like Bell Let’s Talk Day play a key role in breaking the stigma and encouraging young people to seek support.

Mental health struggles are a growing concern among Canadian youth. Suicide is the second leading cause of death, and 24% of youth aged 16 to 24 report having suicidal thoughts. Many hesitate to seek help because of self-stigma—the belief that struggling with mental health makes them weak. Mental health issues often begin before the age of 24, making early support critical. Open discussions can help break the stigma and allow youth to feel empowered and supported.

Bell Let’s Talk is a nationwide initiative that aims to end the stigma around mental health. Since 2010, Bell Let’s Talk Day has raised awareness and funds for mental health programs. The campaign focuses on youth, with suicide and self-stigma being major concerns. Many young people don’t have access to the support they need, and factors like social disconnection and excessive screen time contribute to these challenges.

Youth are especially vulnerable to mental health struggles, which is why addressing these issues is so important. Mental health is about feeling strong and resilient, not just being free of illness. Bell Let’s Talk helps create a space where youth feel comfortable discussing mental health and seeking help. The more we talk about mental health, the more we create an environment where it’s okay to talk about our struggles.

At Collingwood, we’re supporting Bell Let’s Talk Day with activities like a mobile photo booth and free stickers featuring motivational messages. These activities are designed to help students feel empowered to talk about mental health and support each other.

Bell Let’s Talk Day is just the beginning. If you or someone you know is struggling, help is available through school resources, community services, and online platforms.
